Vitamin D3 is a fat soluble vitamin and a critical nutrient for many biologic functions in the body including: immune system health, normal absorption of other nutrients, prevention of Osteoporosis, and maintenance of normal bone density. Horses can make this vitamin in the body when they are exposed to an adequate level of sunlight daily.

Horses with a Vitamin D3 deficiency may experience frequent illness or infection, fatigue, bone and back pain, depression, bone loss, hair loss, muscle pain and/or weakness, anxiety, depigmentation, and impaired wound healing.

Copper is a very important nutrient for normal skin and hair coat color. It is also required for many other cellular processes, which include but are not limited to energy production, brain function, bone density, heart health and proper immune function.

Copper is not produced by the body; therefore, it must be included in the diet in a bio-available form or deficiencies will occur. Copper is one of the first ingredients to become deficient when horses are affected by Leaky Gut Syndrome and Malabsorption Syndrome. It is required by the body to produce proper levels of Melanin, a pigment that colors skin, hair and eyes.

Vitamin B12 requires Cobalt to promote its absorption and further processing within the body. This mineral is very important in the production and functioning of hemoglobin, the substance found in Red Blood Cells that stores Oxygen for transport to the rest of the body. It is also an integral component of the Myelin Sheath, key to normal nervous system function. Cobalt is integral for the proper functioning of the Thyroid Gland and aids in iron absorption.

Brewer’s Yeast is one of the Inactive Ingredients in Chrome, but it is included in a large quantity and includes all the other B Vitamins except for Vitamin B12. B Vitamins are essential in the body for normal cell health, growth of red blood cells, energy levels, eyesight, brain function, digestion, appetite, normal nerve function, hormone production heart health and muscle tone.

An anti-inflammatory diet is an essential part of maintaining proper pigmentation in horses. Feeding any type of feed or supplements that contain Soy will cause Leaky Gut Syndrome, which leads to Malabsorption Syndrome, which is the most common cause of Depigmentation and Vitiligo. It is also important to not over-vaccinate, and in particular to not vaccinate a sick horse or in the face of an outbreak. Read more in the Vaccination articles.
